Prepress is a very important step towards obtaining high-quality printed products. Even with perfect design and excellent appearance the preparation of printing materials for the printing process is required. To create any kind of printing products from the corporate calendar to scientific books you must have an idea what the technological process of preparing the layout for printing copies consists of. If prepress process is performed skillfully by the professionals it allows either avoiding or correcting many different mistakes which entail wasting time, efforts and substantial funds.

What processes are included in the prepress? First of all, if the data necessary for the preparation of the layout is on the paper a specialist in prepress convert it into digital format. Then they retouch the image.

When submitting digital files you might need to work with them on the other software - hardware platform, in this case the professionals carry out the correct conversion from one platform to the other (PC and Macintosh).

Necessary steps of prepress are photographic readout and coloring test.
Proper implementation of the abovementioned processes by professionals ensures superior quality of printed materials.

Through the creation of coloring tests it is possible to achieve either visual or an exact match with the printed image layout. Coloring test allows receiving a check color proof. The creation of coloring tests is not an obligatory stage of prepress but its use makes it possible to get an image prototype which would be published. In the process of prepress coloring tests help to control the quality of future print layouts and avoid the color mistakes.

Photographic readout or photomechanical are made based on the layouts for subsequent printing forms. Photomechanicals are transparent plastic sheets that contain information which will be transferred to the printout by means of using certain colors. Photographic readout allows tracking mistakes and inaccuracies during the prepress process which can ruin the entire edition.

Creation of printing forms is now a digital process and includes the digital processing of textual and graphical information, imposition and design. Creation of printing forms is also an important stage of the prepress process.

Different printing shops demand different layouts. The task of the professionals involved in the prepress process is adaptation of imposed files to the requirements of a particular print shop which would print the edition.

Layouts made in the formats of office programs often require correction therefore the prepress stage requires the preparation of such a layout for printing in the format of the professional imposition.

Printing of edition on the basis of layouts that have not undergone the prepress process might cause many problems because all of the defects, inaccuracies, color and other mistakes will be seen directly in the process of printing itself. There are several types of mistakes encountered by printing shops, they include:

  • lack of trapping;
  • excess of total number of color inks;
  • image in RGB color model;
  • resolution of the images is either too small or too large;
  • secondary black color in the text;
  • improper use of Overprint;
  • lack of bleed capability, etc.
